Service was pretty bad. First off, it was happy-hour, so I'll admit that I wasn't expecting a fine dining experience, but I'd expected better. The waiter forgot one of our drinks, then when we asked for it, he brought out the wrong one. Two of us were drinking iced tea, and after the first round, we were informed that they were out of iced tea, so refills wouldn't be available, yet they didn't offer to take them off the bill.
The food, on the other hand was good. Not great, but definitely worth the price during happy-hour. Sushi I liked. Crispy prawns... well they're alright.
Was my first time there, so hopefully next time will leave a better taste in my mouth.

I've been here only super late night and once for happy hour. The super late night is when you're out in Belltown and you want to satisfy that japanese/sushi craving. I'd probably rather go to Wasabi for sushi but I think advantages to coming here compared to Wasabi are the atmosphere here (more hip), location on 1st - though really how far is 2nd from here =), and also they have a good variety of other dishes and it's not just sushi.
They've got various smaller dishes that are pretty good. I like the raw bar section and their rolls are up to par. Also you can't miss their huge sake menu. The only thing though was the waiter did not seem very knowledgeable about their sakes - which was disappointing since this is a sake house.
The happy hour I really liked - it is 4pm - 8pm at the bar and in the front and they've got a sashimi don that is a small bowl with one kind of fish - your choice, toro is on the list, and rice for $7. The other choices at HH are also good for the price. They also have glasses of sake for $5 and I did those justice =)

I should've read up on Yelp about this place..we should've come during Happy Hour!
Instead.. my husband and I had a late night dinner here on a weeknight when we were visiting Seattle last week. We got seated immediately -- but instantly we both noticed the NOISE level in this place. It was super loud, which is good for groups and big parties.. which is fine-- but I practically had to shout at my husband from across the table since we were seated by a large group, and another couple who's girl who talked extremely loud. Everything was just bouncing off the walls. That's OK - the Sake helped with that..
I agree with the other Yelpers about their service - which blows. Water was always filled - but our other drinks, we had to keep asking for refills. The waiter never came and checked up on us after we received our food either. We also had to ask for the bill after sitting for a long time. Totally not attentive at all.
The menu is pretty large, and they have a ton of sushi rolls. I was really overwhelmed since this was our first time eating here, to read all the rolls they offered, and how they built the rolls. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing?
We ended up ordering a Suzie Rosie ( spicy scallops, avocado, cucumber, wrapped with tuna) , a Spicy Cassidy, ( yellowtail, jalapeƱos, cucumber, topped with salmon & avocado) and a Mr. Perfect roll along with Saba and Hamachi. We were surprised on how large the rolls were size-wise and quantity wise, and the fish was fairly fresh. We did enjoy everything we ordered and found it to be pretty delicious. We were pretty stuffed and we couldn't believe we put all those rolls down after we finished.
We ordered the Green Tea Tiramisu for dessert, and that was just OK. It was sort of dry.
Props though for the edamame to munch on as soon as you sit.
If we're ever in Seattle again -- we'll probably explore other places than visit here again.

My friend in Seattle took me here twice in one night...it was that good. They have a late happy hour, which is pretty awesome. We got sashimi, a couple sushi rolls, and the short ribs. The sashimi was fresh, the sushi rolls were normal but decent, and the short ribs were so good that we considered getting another order but decided we wanted dessert instead. The lychee sorbet is a really refreshing finish to a meal. The lychee lemonades are also good and surprisingly strong for something that tastes so good.
The second time we went here was for a birthday party -- it's a great place to have a party since people can order cheap food off the happy hour menu but there's a lot of tables and open space where people are walking around and drinking. Plus it helped that the birthday boy was drunk off his ass -- that always makes the night way more fun.

One of the best late-night dining hits and overall dining values in Seattle. The Sun-Thurs late night happy hour is burning hot. $5 hot sake pitchers, $3.50 sushi (try the bad boy roll - just great) and delicious izakaya style ginger chicken and short ribs. And the fish is fresh, fresh, fresh. They're doing it right.
Off the regular menu, be sure to try the toro & jalapeno appetizer - essentially a fatty-tuna tartare. As someone who is not a raw fish guy at all, I was amazed and delighted at the buttery, spicy goodness.
The only down sides:
* The noise. Loud groups of obnoxious kids seem to pervade the joint. Nothing scary or awful, just loud obnoxious drunk kids with too much money to spend.
* Intermittently, the service. Varies wildly between attentive and helpful and dismissive. Seems to be better on weeknights.
* Shochu. They don't have any. What?!? An izakaya-style sushi joint without even a bottle of iichiko to be found? For shame.
That being said - can't wait to see you there. One of the best deals in Downtown/Belltown Seattle.

Dear Safa S.
It's not unusual that you were chared the 18% gratuity...it has happened to me and a couple of my friends (4 top) where we were charged an auto grat but our party was not larger than 6..what bullshit! I can't believe the servers there get away with stuff like this....
Good decor, okay ambiance, the tatami room looks sort of boring compared to Yama....their happy hour is actually really decently priced, good "yuppie" sushi, like HUGE nigiri which I don't personally like...i like mine thick but able to eat in 1 bite...their short ribs were good, the shrimp wrapped in noodle was good and of course the infamous badboy roll..i like the food especially when drinking a saporro on draft....i think the beer is about $2.50 or so but it's definitely smaller than a pint..hmmmm
however the service is so freakin pretentious. all 4 times i've visited the servers have been really unattentive and not very nice..almost bored and uninterested in serving our table, i think i got a smile out of 1 server once. i don't really get whats the use of acting too good for your customers...but i guess since you can add gratuity on any table you want it makes sense...for some people being nice takes effort lol...it's a shame umi :(

I LOVE HAPPY HOUR!
*1 sashimi plate (2 pcs of each of white fish, salmon, tuna, albacore and 1 piece of shrimp)
*1 Seattle Roll
*1 Veggie Roll
*2 orders of miso soup
*1 Draft Kirin
*1 Hot Sake
*1 order of the White King Salmon nigiri
* Mochi dessert sampler tray (2 pcs each of strawberry, mango, green tea and cappachino...mmm)
All for $50. That's UN-BELIEVE-ABLE. You can pretty much eat, drink and indulge in dessert for $25 a person. Uhm, that's seriously insane. Such a fantastic deal. I couldn't believe it.
On top of all that, the fish is so fresh, it melts in your mouth, like buttah. Service is great, too. And I dig the decor.
This is one place I would recommend for anyone - residents and visitors alike!

My return to Sushi was well worth the long wait....
It is true, I swore off sushi for about 3 months, since I had a "bad" reaction. Granted I was a sushi whore for a long time, perhaps I just over did it. During my sushi sabbatical, I fought craving after craving, and avoided fish (all types) for some time. (read my Ra review for more info)
Once I planned a trip to Seattle I said to myself, "self, you will eat sushi and if you have to take allergy medicine, then so be it" Leading up to my trip I experimented with different fish, like Mr. Wizard. Me and a Tuna built this rocket that would launch with Vinegar, rubber bands, and and 5 volt battery. (it was the Tuna's idea)
So I was finally OK with the eating of fish!
Once I sat down at Umi, I knew my wait was worth it. Free edamame , how can you go wrong? Happy on Sunday? An eclectic mix of fish at great prices? Nice.....
The first thing I realized that fresh sushi, not frozen like what we get in AZ, is amazingly tender and melts in your mouth. White Salmon is delicious, and I had perhaps the best veggie roll ever, (with beets in it)
The warm saki was perfect on a cool (it was 70 and overcast, eat it PHX) day, and the bill came to 49.75 for 2 people! Unn-beeelivable.
You have to check this place out, whether a local or visitor, you won't be disappointed.

I don't live in Seatlle, so I don't know if your sushi is always this kick-ass or if Umi is more stellar than most. But seriously, BEST. SUSHI. EVER. I know that probably doesn't mean much coming from a no-coast hack, but we actually do have a few decent sushi places in Mpls, and Umi is def a step above. We went for the late-night Sunday happy hour. There were great specials on the regular rolls - around $3 and $4. Special rolls were a bit more, in the $7-$8 range. I tried the Seattle roll, which was salmon, green onion & cream cheese, then the roll was lightly fried on the outside so it was nice and crispy. I've never seen this before, and it was completely delicious. Not as light and delicate as sushi typically is, but the Midwesterner in me appreciated the effort at making sushi as fatty as possible. Also, complementary edamame...nice! I have to mention the salmon and yellowtail nigiri - OMG they melt in your mouth like butter! Also, the decor is awesome, and our server was extremely attentive. What more do you want??? Make it your business to get what I have to believe is some of the best sushi in Seattle, or anywhere.

I've been to Umi a few times for HH, but I wanted to have dinner here before I wrote a full meal deal of a review. I was able to dine there last night with a couple of 'Rockstars' and it was fantastic!
We were lucky enough to find a little space at the bar. If you can.. I'd highly recommend sitting there. The service from the sushi chefs was stellar and they were so happy and polite; IMO, it's the only way to go (here).
We decided we'd 'go big' and ordered several things. We had the Belltown Barbie Roll, the Billy on the Beach Roll, and the First Avenue Roll. We also had a lovely ahi appetizer with a teriyaki glaze and an order of the calamari. My personal favorite was the 'Billy on the Beach'.
It's a bit pricier than some sushi places around town, but the rolls are big, the fish is fresh, and the presentation was beautiful! There's plenty of places around town to get good ol' sushi. Come here if you want 'great'.
Oh, and we did order one 'other' roll. It was delicious, spicy, and 'Hotter than Hell!'**
**Note: Name of Roll is actually the 'Hotter than Hell!' roll. True to it's name, it did not disappoint!

I can't believe I haven't written a review of one of my favorite sushi places yet. Actually, it is probably good because now that I have been a "regular" here for 2 years now, my review has gone from up to 5 stars. To wit:
WHEREAS, the quality of the sushi has always been 5 stars +. Freshest ingredients, creativity in combinations, complex flavors, beautiful presentations.
WHEREAS, sushi chefs are phenomenal--particularly Jose and Billy who quietly (ok, Jose anyway) work their magic. Again, always 5 stars for them.
WHEREAS, the remainder of the wait staff...well, it started out with a 3 star rating (with the exception of Sara). For a long time, you would not have a good experience unless you sat at the sushi bar. I think of the 168 review before me, this was probably the chief complaint. Oftentimes, the waitstaff were too busy being pretty and not serving customers.
WHEREAS, over the past two years, I have slowly seen improvement. There is now a great crew who are more attentive I think. Kudos to the management for working on this issue.
NOW, THEREFORE, in consideration of these changes and other good and valuable consideration, the receipt and sufficiency of which are hereby acknowledged, I grant this restaurant 5 stars.

Horrible. Sushi for both happy hour and regular menu are decent but are rediculusly over priced. For 6 rolls, drinks and 2 deserts bill was 160 plus they forced us to pay 18 percent tip and they only visited our table twice.
Not worth it.
HUGE rolls, and good variety. We're really picky about our fish and rolls, so it's a pretty good deal for the amount of food to price ratio. Good ambiance, great indoor decor, happy hour happens often. A full recommendation.

.....And so on...we began our odyssey at Umi. Because we are smart, smart bitches.
The evening began with my scoring a Doris Day parking spot in front of Umi - only good things could follow:
Super fresh Alaska Uni, buttery Hamachi, have to have a piece of Maguro on GP. All perfect and HUGE pieces - thank god I opted for the single piece and not the pair, and awesome that you're able to get just one if you so desire.
The Naughty Roll was the obvious choice and OH. MY. FUCKING. GOD. it was amazing. Spicy, crab, avocado, and salmon and daikon and yummmmm. Sorry that I can't be more descriptive - the mouthgasm that ensued caused me to blackout for a little while.
Finished up with a Tropical Paradise - strawberries, cucumber, avocado, mango, tobiko, salmon, tuna topped with blueberry sauce. WHAT??? Desert sushi. Sort of fucked with my purist Japophile sensibilities - but the theme of the day is embracing change, letting my routines and patterns fall away and being open to new ideas.
SO YUM.

Very fun and many different types of rolls. Definitely order any of the special rolls...cant go wrong. I love any spicy roll and theirs are good and they have a good selection of them. Agedashi tofu.....super yum!
Great!!! food!!!
To bad it was so noisy that I will not return.
M
Grilled Garlic Short Ribs were very good (they were basically Korean BBQ) The Crispy Prawns were kinda crazy ( they had fried noodles wrapped all around) A mess to eat !! My fave was the Cali-Crunch Roll (in all of it's deep fried tempura goodness) Spider Roll and Shrimp Tempura Roll were both good Green Tea Ice Cream, Lychee Sherbet with Kiwi Sauce, an Ichiban and a Sapporo Beer all for $48.00 What can I complain about ??? Definitely works for me !!
The service was very attentive as far as filling water and clearing plates and Miranda was a great server !!
Just make it in before 6 p.m. or the prices basically double.
I was in town for business. My niece lives in Seattle and took us here since it is her favorite place to eat. I was surprised that it didn't smell like a "sushi' place. I was then surprised at how many tables they have.
We were seated at a low table which was okay - we were removed from the bigger tables. We waited and finally had to ask a waitress who was going to take our order. She apologized and started taking it (even though she wasn't our waitress). Soon after, we were treated to a free appetizer (which was good) to make up for our wait - which wasn't too long.
The food is absolutely the best I have ever had. We had about 4 sushi and 2 sashimi orders. Everything was FANTASTIC.
The only dissapointment is that I can't have it whenever I want. They need to open one in San Francisco!
No students are suggested to go.
They have many kind of sake and vary kinds of rolls and sushi.
I ate the weirdest roll ever that has fruits in side.
The atmosphere is nice, and the location may be perfect.
However, it was really pricey for me. (as a college student)
When my room mate had a birthday party, the bill was more than $500.
Oh well, it is in Beltlown.
Probably best to go for happy our because their happy our drinks are pretty yummy and reasonable.
I may not come back there until I get a real job.
However, it was fun hanging out there.

Probably has to be my favorite place in Seattle for sushi. Albeit there are some other good ones, I just haven't found them yet. Happy hour is awesome, lots of great choices for even better prices. In the front section the HH goes until 8pm! All the other menu items besides the sushi, are equally excellent, especially the short ribs and ginger chicken. Even the regular dinner prices aren't too bad. If you like sushi - go there - don't ask questions - just go. You won't regret it, maybe if you eat too much, like I usually do, but even then it is so good, you don't really.

Happy Hour was da bomb here. Umi offers a good variety of foods and drinks at a little under half off and the best part is that happy hour runs late here making it possible for working people to get a good deal (although you may have to wait a while for seats). Cooked appetizers are not mind-blowing but still solid. Fish is fairly fresh. On the regular menu, the extensive selection of rolls here are creative, and the ones we got "Casino Royale" and "I Love Sushi" roll were both tasty.

I've been a handful of times but more recently, I celebrated a friends engagement and attended her Bachelorette party here at UMI. The vibe is always relaxed though your eyes witness it busy 3/4 of the time.
The sake list is extensive but slightly higher priced than what I am used to. They've excellent ginger and orange sake martini's, try them!! They do not disappoint.
In ordering food, I would recommend ordering smaller and then more if you need to. The portions are large and unexpectedly filling.
Call ahead for reservations. It pays off to be able to walk in and be seated rather then wait 20-45 minutes. I'd recommend the back room. There is a lot of natural light there and they turn the disco ball on late in the night. The red plastic chairs give it a really fun twist to!

Umi is sushi (at least to me). Everytime I go to Seattle, Umi is on the priority list. As stated in previous posts, their happy hour is fantastic and cheap! Dinner is a bit pricier, but when you factor in that you are in Belltown, it is pretty cheap. My favorite roll would be "The Legend" and advise everyone to at least try it.
We have been to Japan and there are much better Japanese restaurants in Seattle for a much lower price. Try Maneki or Kaname in the International District.
Two stars: one for the sake selection, the other for the prompt service (with instant edamame) and great decor.
The sashimi was prepared seemingly without skill. The fish itself was not fresh and smelled fishy (a telltale sign of bad handling). In addition, the cuts themselves were sloppy (with little bits dangling from the sashimi). If you take a close look at the sushi bar, none of the "sushi chefs" are Japanese, and everything seems to be pre-cut in little metal containers.
The sake was extremely overpriced. You could buy the exact bottle for $20 cheaper at Uwajimaya (nearby Japanese supermarket). Our entrees were unremarkable.
My friends treated me for a birthday dinner here and I had a great time. We got the crispy calamari, and three rolls: suzie rosie (I really liked this one), mango tango (more dessert-ish but still good) and the spider roll (oldie but goldie). My only issue was the crispy calamari because I felt like they cheated using the Thai sweet chili sauce that you can buy at an Asian market. Otherwise good experience and I'd like to make it back for happy hour!
I think I just found my new favourite Japanese restaurant. Arrived at around 8 on a Friday and had a 45 minute wait. Once we were seated it took almost half an hour before we could get a server to take our order. That aside, our waiter was very attentive the rest of the night. Umi has a large selection of sashimi and rolls and all are delicious and affordable (about $10-$12/roll). The company that evening included three guys but only four rolls and an appetizer seemed to suit us that evening. Sake was great but I don't remember paying $50/bottle at other places. Despite all the waiting the ambiance was very nice (it suited my inner San Franny yuppie/hipster) and I had a great night out. I would definitely bring my friends back here in the future.

Although we didn't order any sakes when we were here, we were happy with our yummy fruity rolls. It was a late dinner for us so many of our selections were light and fruity. I've been here twice (poor college student, can't come here often as I wish) but I l love the rolls here. Although the price here is more expensive, their rolls are also bigger then others. The miso we got was cold and the crispy calamari was not hot at all and it wasn't "crispy". The sushi pieces are ok but it's too over-priced for me. Also the desserts are just as over-priced (we got two green tea ice cream and some $9 buddha dessert that consist of three tiny pieces).
Our order:
Crispy Calamari
Amaebi
Mango Tango
Tropical Paradise
Umi House Roll
Ocean Roll
+another fruity/veggie roll special (forgot the name)

Umi Sake House is probably one of my absolute favorite happy hours in Seattle. The restaurant is divided into different areas and each one has a different feeling. Umi supplies you with some pre-dinner edamame, my favorite little snack. I actually don't like seafood, so I appreciate that it doesn't smell "fishy" :) My favorites things to order are either the veggie sushi roll and/or the spicy ginger chicken. The prices are decent, the wait staff are attentive and the atmosphere makes you want to stay all night. I would definitely recommend a visit!

Sooooo dang good, but the rolls are really large: every group always orders too many and then we stuff ourselves because we get to feeling invincible on our sushi high...then it is painful.
So: too much of a good thing is a bad thing, but I can't really fault them for my lack of self control.
I love the feel of the different spaces inside. The front room is kinda drafty, so you might want to request "not there" if you can. You tend to end up there if you drop in sans reservations, which is easy to avoid. I have been there with veggies and vegans and everyone left happy: don't hesitate to ask about ingredients or substitutions. Sake menu is extensive and, sadly, expensive.

Outstanding happy hour! Went here on Friday and we tried a bunch of stuff off the happy hour menu. Some of the highlights included the sashimi set which offered a nice sampling, the calamari and I really enjoyed the spareribs (and they are usually something I don't eat/like). Service was solid for our large group that kept growing. I will definitely be back for an inexpensive (and good) sushi fix during happy hour.
Happy hour is fantastic. You might have to wait a bit to get on the front porch (it has 4 tables) but it's worth it as happy hour on the porch lasts until 8 pm. Sashimi sampler ($10) - is outstanding. Very good very fresh. The happy hour rolls don't offer a lot of variety but it's still a good deal. The non-sushi items for happy hour are great: calamari salad is delicious. $4 house saki (warm) is a steal.
We had my birthday party in the back of the restaurant (private table). We had a blast: food excellent, service excellent. Dragon punch (lychee) good but a little on the sweet side. Can't remember the name of the roll with the strawberry habanero sauce, but it was my favorite.

Umi has everything going for it. From the decor to the food, it is just well put together. After making Saturday night reservations for four mid-day we arrived and were seated right away. The place was pretty packed and had very full tables. The service was still really great. We ordered some hot sake and the small bottles/carafe were less than $10 each. They also carry an extremely large can of Asahi beer, which I suggest ordering just for kicks and sharing.
The rolls were very good and they spaced them out well so that we weren't rushed. The suggestions that the waitress made were good picks. AT the end of the meal it was just over $100 and we were all full and happy. What a great price for dinner and drinks! I would suggest the Seattle crunch or simply the spicy tuna. Both excellent choices!

Mouth's watering already from the thought of it! My absolute favorite hour of joy for fresh raw fish that makes my tongue dance. The sashimi - OMG, can I say orgasmic? My staple: yellowtail, albacore, salmon but I usually go for everything sashimi. Other items on the meal deal menu are good as well. Had all kinds of celebrations here: bon voyage, my over-the-hill birfday, good days, not-so-good days... First place to visit when I get back there in August. Hope it maintained their awesomeness!! Oh yeh, the decor fits my taste more than when it was the Bada Lounge, tatani room for private parties, seat warmer in the girl's powder room and people are easy on the eyes. And hey, have I mentioned the tasty morsels? I'm a glutton for the food here!
I agree with Mitzie - the Bad Boy is oh-so-good, and I'm not a fan of teh rolls. Everything else? Not so much. I was totally expecting perfection here because so many people had recommended it to me, but... no. Nothing was as fresh as promised. I dunno, it just didn't hit the sushi spot, that large space in my stomach that requires seasoned rice and raw fish to fill it once a week or so.
Kudos on the cheap drinks for happy hour, though. I got a LOT of sake for very cheap.

Amazing. That about sums up Umi. The atmosphere is great; they have a great indoor patio with sky lights and plants. It's WAY bigger than it looks from the street. The service is courteous and attentive, the sushi is fresh and delicious, and the don't skimp! Go for happy hour. 12 peices of sushi, a crunchy roll, edamame, and a tuna entree for about $25. They have a fresh fish list every day too.
